Commander of the Navy felicitated by Sylvestrians





Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage was felicitated by his alma mater, St. Sylvester's College in Kandy. The felicitation ceremony organized by the Old Boys Association was held at the College Auditorium on 09th October 2012.
On arrival, the Commander of the Navy was warmly received by the Principal and the Staff and was ushered into the felicitation venue by the school band. The school sea and army cadet platoons accorded him a Guard of Honour and the students lined up the street extending him warm greetings.
A large number of dignitaries including Bishop of Kandy, Rt. Rev. Dr. Viyaaney Fernando, Governor of the Central Province Hon. Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, DIG (Rtd) Nimal Lewke, Mayor of Kandy, Mr. Mahendra Ratwatte, Secretary of Central Province Ministry of Education, Mr. M.S. Premawansa, Divisional Secretary of Kandy, Mr. Gamini Senevirathna, Central Province Director of Education, Mr. Thilak Ekanayake, Principal, Mr. Ranil S. Meetiyagoda, Staff, students both past and present, and well-wishers were present to pay their tribute to Vice Admiral Colombage for being a distinguished past pupil who has made his alma mater proud through his bravery and the yeoman service rendered to the  motherland.
Two prominent old boys of the college, the Governor of the Central Province and DIG (Rtd) Lewke, addressing the distinguished gathering, hailed the achievements of the Navy Commander in glowing terms. They said that the entire Central Province is today proud of Vice Admiral Colombage for being the first personality to have risen to the position of heading an armed service and earning fame as a decorated military personality and a scholar of international repute. His distinguished career is an example of what hard work and determination can achieve.   
Commander of the Navy, expressing his gratitude for the colourful felicitation ceremony organized on his behalf, reminisced the memorable moments spent at his beloved alma mater which cherished him with love and care making his school days the most pleasurable occasion in his life and nurtured him towards a career path that enabled him to give his very best for a noble course with utmost confidence and unwavering commitment. He recalled how he strived hard to achieve success with the able guidance received from his dear teachers and the generous support given by his erstwhile school friends who stood by him at all times. He entreated the students to emulate his achievements to serve the country with distinction in their chosen fields. The Navy Commander also took the opportunity to confer badges on the college prefects and requested them to always lead by example instilling discipline and perseverance in their fellow students.

Vice Admiral Colombage is a product of St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy and becomes the first Old Sylvestian to be elevated to the position a Service Commander in the military history of Sri Lanka.

His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka has been pleased to appoint Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc as the new Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy and promote him to the 3-star rank of a Vice Admiral with effect from 27th September 2012. He is the 18th Naval Officer to reach the helm in the 61-year history of the glorious Naval Service.

London Olympic 2012

Two Sri Lankan (Sylvestrians) students have received a novel opportunity to not only witness but to also hold the 2012 Olympic torch which is currently travelling across United Kingdom.




Annual Cadet Band Assessment Camp 2012



St. Sylvester's College Cadet Band won 3rd Place & they won 1st Place in BEST MUSIC event.

The Annual Eastern Band Assessment Camp was conducted at the NCC Training Centre, Rantembe from 14.07.2012 to 21.07.2012. The Passing Out Parade of the camp was held on 20.07.2012 and Major General GBW Jayasundara RWP RSP - Director National Cadet Corps took the salute of the Parade as the Chief Guest of this occasion.


The Annual Western Band Assessment Camp was conducted at the NCC Training Centre, Rantembe from 05.07.2012 to 12.07.2012. The Passing Out Parade of the camp was held on 11.07.2012 and Major General GBW Jayasundara RWP RSP - Director National Cadet Corps was the Chief Guest of this occasion.

Deneth Dulara Jayasinghe of St.Sylvester's College Gymnastics Club won the Gold medal and Became the under 10 Junior National Champion at Sri Lanka Junior National Gymnastics Championship

Sylvestrian W.M.Mufees won junior carrom single title in the 11th Junior National Carrom Championship which worked off at the Carrom Federation premises in Maharagama





All Island Islamic Debate Competition

St. Sylvester's college became champions of the all island islamic debate competition organized by kingswood College, islamic majlis 



Durham International Youth Games 2012

Two sylvestrian athletes who brought honor to their alma mata with one gold medal,one silver medal and one bronz medal by representing sri lanka for Durham International Youth Games 2012 Durham , United Kingdom





Kandy District Gymnastics Championship

St. Sylvester’s College Gymnastics Team won the Kandy District Gymnastics Championship with 34 Medals





Male Sea Cadet Assessment Camp 2012

Male Sea Cadet Assessment Camp 2012, which was held at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in Trincomalee, concluded on 09th June 2012. Commandant, Naval Volunteer Force, Rear Admiral SMB Weerasekara was the Chief Guest at the concluding ceremony.


The Naval Wing of the National Cadet Corps, which was started in 2008, has now 180 platoons covering the whole island.

St. Sylvester's College won the 1st place this year scoring 1242.6 marks. 




Two Cadet Bands and Navy’s Western and Cultural Band presented a colourful show at the concluding ceremony, which was attended by officers from the Eastern Naval Area and the National Cadet Corps, the principals and teachers from the schools and parents.

The Dual Athletic Meet

That was the proud achievement of St. Sylvester's College, Kandy athlete H.A.M. Asardeen in the Dual Athletic Meet between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai between 19th to 24th December 2011. Asardeen running in the under 14 age group for boys, came first in the 100 metres in 12.3 seconds, 200 metres again first in 25.5 seconds and first in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.42 meters.
